Have you ever sat at home wondering where your kids are and what they may be getting up to? Generally, you will ask your children to check in regularly by phone if they are out in town or further afield; however, as any parent will know, a phone call is often not forthcoming. Fortunately, we live in a digital age and this means being able to track your kids’ movements via GPS. The Spark Nano 3.0 from BrickHouse Security is one of several GPS tracking devices currently on the market, but by offering Brickhouse’s trademark ease of use and a long battery life, this little GPS unit might just be the best yet.
If you are giving a GPS tracker to your children, it is going to need to be something that is easy to carry around – fortunately, the Spark Nano is just that. At just 67.5 x 40 x 21mm and 60 grams, the Nano is smaller and lighter than a cell phone and can easily fit in the pocket.
The small white device is made from tough, durable, weather-resistant plastic and feels as though it could handle a rough ride in a teenager’s backpack. It is also very minimalistic with only ports for SIM card, USB and charger and a useful panic button visible.
In the box, the Spark Nano 3.0 comes with a wall charger to top up the 1300mAh when required, although, with three weeks off a single charge, the charger is not something that will be needed to often!
The Spark Nano 3.0 comes packed with features, including:
- Motion-activated tracking
- Optional six month battery extension
- Detailed, customizable travel reports and alerts
- 1-10 Minute Location Updates
- 50-Channel All-In-View Tracking
- Three monitoring options via BrickHouse Security’s GPS Server
To take advantage of these features, however, you are going to need to sign up for a service plan.
To use the Spark Nano 3.0 you are required to take out a service plan with Brickhouse Security. A T-Mobile SIM card is already included in the device and the service plan will cost you $29.95 per month with discounts available on multiple devices and users that pay ahead. This monthly figure also includes the activation fee which does give you a saving, albeit it relatively small one.
Using the device
As with many Brickhouse products, the Spark Nano is fairly easy to you. You simply place the device on whomever or whatever you are wanting to track and login to the web interface on any computer, smartphone or tablet to view its whereabouts. The interface is easy to navigate and gives the option of switching between several mapping views including Street Map, Satellite Map, or my personal favorite, Google Street View. The user control panel can also be used to customize email and smartphone alerts.
Overall, the Spark Nano 3.0 is an excellent GPS tracking tool with great battery life, easy set-up and a great user-interface. Monthly service plans may not be to everybody’s liking, but that is a price you must pay for real-time GPS tracking and given how brilliant this device is, $29.95 per month for unlimited tracking is a small price to pay.
